The story
Seif Amr co-founded Thndr with Ahmad Hammouda. Like Hammouda, he started in investment banking before moving to Uber, where he was an operations manager in Dubai. The pair set out to build a low-cost digital brokerage so that Egyptians could invest in stocks, bonds and funds from small amounts. They were rejected by 45 investors before Y Combinator backed them in its Summer 2020 batch, and they spent months persuading Egypt's Financial Regulatory Authority to grant the country's first new brokerage licence since 2008, which arrived in August 2020. In February 2022 Thndr raised a $20 million Series A co-led by Tiger Global, BECO Capital and Prosus Ventures, and in May 2025 a further $15.7 million led by Prosus. Thndr now holds about $960 million in platform assets, has expanded to the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange and is seeking a licence in Saudi Arabia.
