Kitopi became the third Middle Eastern unicorn in July 2021 and the first UAE company backed by SoftBank's Vision Fund 2. It has since moved from running kitchens for other brands to owning and operating restaurant brands, including the 2023 acquisition of AWJ, the group behind Operation Falafel.
